Travel Money Tips

ATMs - Some ATMs may charge a withdrawal fee, in addition to any fee associated with your Card. It's best to check before you use.

Be prepared - put the Card Services phone number for the country (or countries) you are traveling to in your cell phone. You can then easily contact Card Services to check your balance or if you need help.

Please note, calls from cell phones are not free of charge, and hotels may also charge for calls to toll-free numbers.

There are a number of countries where Multi-currency Cash Passport Prepaid MasterCard cannot be used. If you attempt to withdraw cash or use your Card at merchants in any of these countries, your request will be declined and the reason given as 'Decline, prohibited country'.

Currently, Multi-currency Cash Passport Prepaid MasterCard cannot be used in: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia Herzegovina, Burma (Myanmar), Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo), Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Cuba, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kenya, Kosovo, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Macedonia, Montenegro, North Korea, Pakistan, São Tomé Príncipe, Serbia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Turkey, Vietnam, Yemen, Zimbabwe.

Ways to use your Card:

  1. Make purchases for yourself, friends and family – in shops and online, anywhere Debit MasterCard is accepted!
  2. Pay for meals and activities
  3. Pay in local Currency
  4. Withdraw cash from ATMs

It is important to note that when you are traveling, you may get the choice of paying in a different currency than the local currency. By choosing to pay in the local currency, you may avoid an extra foreign exchange conversion. Remember that if you do not have enough funds in the local Currency on your Card, the balance will be taken from another Currency on your Card, in the following order of priority: US Dollars, British Pounds Sterling, Euros, Canadian Dollars, Australian Dollars and Japanese Yen, at an exchange rate determined by MasterCard on the day the transaction is processed, increased by a Foreign Exchange Fee determined by us (see the Fees and Limits section for more details).

Remember that if you do not have enough funds to pay for a purchase in the relevant Currency on your Card, the rest will be taken from another Currency on your Card and you will pay a foreign exchange fee. Please reference the Fees and Limits tables for more information.

Things you should not do with your Card:

  1. Don’t give your Card number to anyone, unless you make a transaction or contact Card Services – we will never call you to ask you for your Card number
  2. Do not share your PIN (note your PIN can’t be changed)
  3. Don’t use your Card to reserve a rental car or hotel room, and on cruises

When you use your Card as a deposit with car rental companies, hotels or cruise lines, they may require authorization of an amount larger than the transaction as a guarantee of payment. Although you will only be charged for the actual and final amount of the transaction, any additional amount that is included in the initial authorization will be temporarily unavailable to you. Therefore, we do not recommend transactions that could create larger authorizations in which case the funds could be unavailable to you for a period of time.
